Your search for the right school for your child is one of the most important parts of your relocation. If you are relocating from Europe, you might be used to a system where the schools are used to – and open to – students starting at any point during the year. Some schools in L.A. will consider that option; many will not. You might be used to a fairly simple and straightforward application process; it is not quite as simple to apply to L.A. private schools.
And starting the search on your own and contacting all of the schools you might find on the internet can backfire in a competitive admissions climate. For one, other than what the school says about itself on its website, you don’t know that this school will be a fit for your child. You also run the risk of having the schools eliminate your child as a candidate even before you’ve had a chance to apply.
As L.A. Relocation Scout/L.A. School Scout, we coach you and take charge of the application process, guiding you in both deciding on which schools would be a fit, and in tackling all of the elements that go into a successful application.
We prepare a customized list of schools for you, matching your specific criteria for each child in the family, preschool through 12th grade. For those of you from the U.K, dealing with A levels and GCSE and trying to determine the grade equivalents, we will work with you on that, as well as on fulfilling the testing requirements for L.A. private schools.
“A” levels, by the way, can be considered equivalent in terms of course content to AP classes in American high schools. Students in the AP classes take the Collegeboard Advanced Placement exams. In terms of university applications, “A” Levels are equated to the SAT II subject test requirement. According to the US Education Advisory Service:
"Although there are no official equivalencies between the US and UK education systems, most UK and US educators agree that a US high school diploma (without AP courses) can be roughly compared to five GCSE passes at grade C and above."
In addition, we will arrange for private tours and interviews with school admissions departments, and help you complete the application requirements, until you have successfully enrolled your children in a school.
For those considering going back to the U.K. for university, bear in mind they require a GPA of around 3.6, and an ACT composite score of 26-28.
